Netball Players Call for Swift Resolution in Pay Dispute with Netball Australia

England netball players, Eleanor Cardwell and Sasha Glasgow, have expressed their dismay at the ongoing pay dispute between Netball Australia and the Netball Players Association (ANPA). The conflict has left players unpaid since the expiration of their last contract in September, leading to significant distress within the netball community.

ANPA chief executive Kathryn Harby-Williams revealed the extent of the players’ plight, stating that some have resorted to “sleeping in their cars” amid the stand-off. ANPA president Jo Weston broke down in tears during a press conference, emphasizing the urgency of reaching an agreement with Netball Australia.

Cardwell and Glasgow, who play in Australia’s domestic netball league, spoke to Sky Sports, expressing their support for the affected players and calling for a swift resolution.

“It’s been really hard, we’re a bit separated from it at the minute because obviously we’re here in England,” said Cardwell. “But we’re constantly feeling for all those girls up there that are getting nothing.”

Both players highlighted the resilience of their fellow athletes and their commitment to sacrificing the present for the future of netball in Australia. Cardwell emphasized the stress caused by the absence of contracts and the uncertainty it brings for the players.

Netball Australia recently proposed an offer to the players, featuring an 11% pay rise over a three-year term, retroactive to October 1. However, the offer was rejected by the players, and Harby-Williams criticized it as a “publicity stunt.”

Cardwell expressed shock at the situation, stating, “It has truly shocked me, and I just hope England Netball will never do this to the England players.”

Glasgow echoed the sentiment, describing the current state of limbo for the players as contradictory to the excitement and anticipation that should accompany the league. The players hope for a resolution soon, emphasizing the importance of trust between players and the league for the sustained success of the sport.
