Known for his flair for fun and artistry, rapper-actor Drake has embarked on an exciting venture by investing in and reviving a long-forgotten amusement park, breathing new life into an abandoned gem in Hamburg, Germany.
Originally debuting in 1987 as the “fairground of sensations” and “the museum of the future,” the park, named Luna Luna, was a creation by André Heller, known for commissioning works by art icons like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.
The amusement park’s rides, perfectly preserved but decommissioned for over 30 years in a Texas facility, caught Drake’s attention. Through his entertainment firm, DreamCrew, he acquired the rides and invested over $100 million in recreating the magic in Los Angeles. The revamped park, titled “Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy,” is housed in a massive 60,000-square-foot complex and is set to open to the public this month, running through the spring of 2024.
While guests won’t physically ride Basquiat’s Ferris wheel or Haring’s carousel due to their extraordinary value and rarity, they can enjoy a carnival-like atmosphere. The aim is to transform the space into a dynamic art exhibit, complete with performers wandering the warehouse. Visitors can explore unique pieces, such as Salvador Dalí’s “Dalídom,” a geodesic dome offering a one-of-a-kind funhouse experience.
Helen Molesworth, the park’s curatorial adviser, expressed the liberating essence of Luna Luna: “It’s like someone goes around and untightens the screws of your need to behave, your need to be good, your need to be smart, your need to be proper. Someone just untightens those four screws, and you can think different things and feel different things.”
While ticket prices are yet to be announced, interested individuals can sign up for email alerts on the attraction’s website. DreamCrew has promised that “Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy” is just the initial chapter of an ongoing project, promising more fantastical parks in the future.
